News update

Ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, new Real Madrid player, Rodrygo Goes, has revealed on Sunday how head coach, Zinedine Zidane, plans to use him in the first team.

The 18-year-old was speaking following his new club’s 3-1 defeat to German champions, Bayern Munich, in an International Champions Cup match played in Houston, USA as part Real Madrid’s pre-season preparations.

While it was a sad end for the Spanish giants, it was still a day to remember for the teenage sensation who marked his first appearance for Los Blancos with a well taken free-kick to score Madrid’s consolation in the closing stages.

That effort was a glimpse of the qualities which convinced Real Madrid to splash the cash to get him from Santos in Brazil and it would have left a big impression on Zidane who plans to play him more centrally according to the teenager.

“Zidane wants me to play more down the middle,” Rodrygo said to Marca after the Bayern encounter. “I am typically more used to operating on the wings, but that is what the coach wants. It’s a position in which I am comfortable and enjoy.”

However, the teenager remains unsure if he would feature regularly for the first team when the season starts. “I am not sure whether I will be playing in the first team yet. It is up to Zidane and his staff to decide where best to utilise me,” the £40 million man said.

Rodrygo scored eight goals in 35 league games for his former club in 2018 playing mostly on the left flank, but he admitted that the choice of whether he plays and where he is used is out of his hands.

However, he could get another chance to make a big impression when Real Madrid take on 2019 Europa League finalists, Arsenal, in their next ICC 2019 match on Tuesday.

The Gunners are looking to make it three wins from as many matches in the pre-season competition following wins over Bayern and Fiorentina.
Should Rodrygo be played on the flanks as he always has or should he start playing down the middle as Zidane plans to? Share your views on this with us in the comment section.
